London Luton Airspace Changes

As you may be aware, NATS (National Air Traffic Services) and London Luton Airport have enacted the Swanwick Airspace Improvement Programme,  which separates the Stansted and Luton arrival flows and extends the flight path for the approach into Luton into airspace above the Cambridge area. This has led to an increase in air traffic over Hilton, with the resulting increase in noise.

The implementation of the Programme is now at its final stage, with the Civil Aviation Authority conducting a 12-month Post-Implementation Review examining how the airspace change has performed, and whether the anticipated impacts and benefits have been delivered.

Anyone with a noise complaint can use Luton airport’s TraVis system to make a report online, whether about noise in general or a specific noise incident. To report other environmental disturbances, phone 01582 395382 or email .

County Broadband Rollout

Hilton now has sufficient pre-orders for the County Broadband installation of full-fibre hyperfast broadband. This means that the project will now go ahead and will hopefully be completed in 6-12 months. The deadline for pre-orders (which includes free installation and a router) is Thursday 8th September.

Draft Masterplans Available for Feedback

Huntingdonshire District Council has published draft masterplan documents for three of its market towns to allow residents and local stakeholders to give their views on the potential vision and future projects for the town.

The market towns of Huntingdon, Ramsey and St Ives now have draft masterplans published which can be viewed on the council’s website, alongside a feedback form for local people to have their say on what is most important for their towns, what will have the greatest positive impact and which types of projects should be prioritised.

Executive Councillor for Jobs, Economy & Housing, Cllr Sam Wakeford, said: “It is crucial to highlight that these masterplan documents for each town are just drafts at this stage. The council has been working with designers and analysts over the last 12 months to create a future vision and aims for the three towns. The masterplans equip the council to access funding opportunities, as they arise, to explore potential projects which can provide meaningful impacts locally as well as maximising value for money.

“As these documents are currently in draft, we are very keen for local people to look and help us to shape them into the most suitable vision for each of these unique market towns. Please have a look through the masterplans and provide your feedback through our form so that we can capture your thoughts and utilise your feedback to create future visions for each town.”

The draft masterplan documents for Huntingdon, Ramsey and St Ives can be found by visiting, www.huntingdonshire.gov.uk/masterplans. There you will find background information on the masterplans, baseline reports for each town and the opportunity to submit feedback and share your thoughts on the district’s towns.

The District Council will be holding meetings with local councillors, town councils and parish councils to have in-depth discussions about the future of their local market towns, as well as encouraging feedback through our feedback form.

St Neots has already been through its own masterplan process which culminated in the District Council successfully applying for the Department of Levelling Up, Housing and Communities’ Future High Streets Fund, funding from National Highways and the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority as part of the major programme of investment in St Neots.

Have Your Say on Huntingdonshire’s Future

Huntingdonshire District Council is running a series of focus groups for local people to have their say on the future of the District.

As part of Huntingdonshire Futures – a new strategy that will shape a vision for the future of the District by incorporating People, Place, the Economy and Environment – local people are encouraged to join the conversation and take part in focus groups to explore the ‘what if’s’ that will define the area’s future.

The focus groups will be an open discussion about what Huntingdonshire’s vision, aspirations and ambitions for 2050 should be, and what initiatives and changes need to be made for this to happen. The sessions will last about an hour and refreshments will be provided.

Focus groups will take place on:

  • Monday 5 September, 6pm, at Bury Village Hall
  • Tuesday 6 September, 6pm, at Alconbury Memorial Hall
  • Thursday 8 September, 6pm, at Huntingdon Town Hall
  • Friday 9 September, 6pm, at Queens Park Hall, Yaxley
  • Monday 12 September, 8pm, on Zoom

Anyone who would like to join a focus group session should visit the Huntingdonshire Futures Eventbrite page and register. The session will last about an hour, and we will provide refreshments. As a thank you for their time all participants will be entitled to claim a £10 shopping voucher.

Other ways that local people can get involved and join the conversation can be found on www.huntingdonshirefutures.net

Avian Influenza

Defra has confirmed a number of cases of avian influenza (bird flu) in the wild bird population of Huntingdonshire, centred on the River Ouse.
Bird flu is primarily a disease of birds and the risk to the general public’s health is very low.
If you are visiting our open spaces, please consider:
🔹 Keeping to footpaths
🔹 Keeping dogs on leads
🔹 Do not feed wild waterfowl
🔹 Do not pick up or touch dead or sick wild birds
🔹 Do not touch wild bird feathers or surfaces contaminated with wild bird droppings

Hilton SpeedWatch Needs Your Help

Hilton Speedwatch is looking for volunteers to join their group. The Community Speedwatch scheme trains volunteers from members of the community to get actively involved in monitoring the speed of vehicles travelling through their neighbourhood. It is used in areas where speeding has been identified as a priority at quarterly neighbourhood panel meetings.

Speedwatch are now also able to monitor HGVs that are breaching the weight limit and can be more effective with a larger team.

Community Speedwatch is operated by Cambridgeshire Constabulary in partnership with your local council and other agencies. The scheme itself is run by the Police and the community volunteers supported by the County coordinator.

Flood Resilience Day

Residents of Hilton and the surrounding areas are being invited to a special Flood Resilience Day on Saturday 23 July.

The event is being hosted by Cambridgeshire County Council, offering expert advice to households and businesses in the area which have previously experienced flooding. A special ‘Floodmobile’ vehicle, which contains samples of over 50 practical flood protection measures, will be on site for visitors to explore.

The event is an opportunity for people to come and learn what can be done to help make their properties resilient against flooding. The event is taking place on Saturday 23 July at Hilton Village Hall Car Park (Grove End, Hilton, Huntingdon, PE28 9PF) from 10am to 4pm.

The event will be attended by Fola Ogunyoye CEng CWEM FCIWEM, Director of TJAY Consultancy Ltd who has more than 30 years’ of expertise in providing flood risk, water and environmental management consultancy services and Mary Dhonau, a flood resilience campaigner who has spent 20 years supporting communities at risk of flooding.

The Flood Resilience days are part of the Community Flood Action Programme (CFAP), which was set up in April 2021 by Cambridgeshire County Council, following severe flooding in December 2020 and the increasing risk of flooding posed by climate change. Since then, council officers have worked with communities to develop and train flood groups and build local resilience.

Councillor Lorna Dupré, Chair of the Environment and Green Investment Committee, Cambridgeshire County Council, said: “Many areas of our region are unfortunately at increased risk of flooding due to climate change and projected increases in extreme rainfall.

“Our Flood Resilience Days are an opportunity to talk to flood resilience experts and learn what we can do as individuals and communities to make our properties more flood resilient. The events are free and I would urge local residents to please come and join us.”

The council has committed to invest £75,000 to ensure that the scheme can continue for 2022/23 and build on the positive work already achieved. It is hoped that the scheme can continue beyond next year.

To discuss the potential of running a Property Flood Resilience Day event in your area, please email the Community Flood Action Programme team:
