Message from National Highways:

What is happening?

As part of the construction of the new dual carriageway between the Black Cat roundabout and Caxton Gibbet, changes are being made to the A428 at Eltisley. The B1040 north junction at St Ives Road will be removed, and two new roundabouts will be built. These roundabouts will be linked by a bridge that crosses over the new A421 dual carriageway.

From 14 April 2025, traffic on the A428 will be redirected onto this new stretch of road. Following this, we will remove the section of old A428 carriageway and create a new connection to Cambridge Road in Eltisley.

On the new section of the A428 (map 1), eastbound traffic will be slightly north of the existing road. Vehicles will travel through the south roundabout, cross a new bridge, and reach the north roundabout. From there, drivers can either head north on the B1040 towards Papworth Everard or continue east to Caxton Gibbet roundabout.

For westbound traffic, the route is the reverse. Vehicles coming from Caxton Gibbet or Papworth Everard will enter the north roundabout, cross the bridge heading south, and continue west on the A428 towards St Neots.

Cambridge Road reopens

Once traffic moves to the new A428 route at Eltisley (Map 2), the old section will be removed. This will allow for the construction of a new connection between the south roundabout and Cambridge Road in Eltisley, which is currently closed. We expect to open this section in Summer 2025.We are working closely with the Local Authority and parish council to ensure a smooth reopening of Cambridge Road.

New A421 dual carriageway

The new A421 dual carriageway is set to open in spring 2027 and will pass under the bridge at Eltisley. There will be no direct access to this road from Eltisley, with the nearest junctions located at Caxton Gibbet. While some sections are already open, work is still ongoing to complete this part of the scheme.

Eltisley Junction from summer 25

Why is this needed?

To complete the above work safely, we need to close sections of road to access the full width of the A428 and B1040. The below closures will provide the additional room needed to carry out the work safely and efficiently.

We will do our best to complete the work as quickly as possible, however all dates are subject to change due to weather and operational requirements.

A1198 Overnight Closures

From Monday 24 to Friday 28 March, 8pm to 6am the A1198 from Caxton Gibbet to Papworth Everard will be closed in both directions to complete tie-in works at the northern roundabout.

To ensure minimal disruption, a well-planned diversion route has been established. Please follow the signs and instructions along the route (Diversion map 3):

  • Diversion Start Point:  From A428 / Caxton Gibbet roundabout. Traffic will be diverted along the A428 towards St Neots. Traffic to continue northbound on B1040 St Ives Road and rejoin the A1198.
  • Diversion End Point:  From A1198 / Ermine Street South roundabout. Traffic will be west along A1198, then south via B1040 St Ives Road. Then follow diversion signage to the A428.
