London Road Re-opened

Message received from Cambridgeshire County Council:

Resurfacing work along London Road, St Ives, has now been completed ahead of the weekend and the road has re-opened.

Our highways team were on site early this morning and have finished resurfacing the road and it re-opened at about 2.30pm today.

Due to the weather, the road markings cannot be added today and the crews will return in the next few weeks to complete this work and carry out repairs to the footpath and traffic lights.

Councillor Ian Bates, local member for The Hemingfords and Fenstanton at Cambridgeshire County Council, said: “Having visited the site this morning I’d like to say thank you to our highways team and partners for carrying out the work so the road could reopen so quickly. I’d also like to thank local residents for their patience whilst this was ongoing and diversions were in place.”

Fire in London Road, St Ives

As you are no doubt aware, there was a lorry fire on London Road in St Ives on Tuesday.

The road where a chemical lorry burst into flames still hasn’t been able to reopen after the incident earlier this week.

Emergency services and specialist cleaning teams have been working on reopening London Road near St Ives, Cambridgeshire since Tuesday night (December 1).

The lorry which was carrying a number of chemical barrels exploded into flames, causing significant damage to the surface of the road.

The burnt-out vehicle was only recovered from the scene on Thursday (December 3) as its remaining contents had to be carefully removed.

Once it had been removed the Environment Agency and Anglian Water have been cleaning the drains, while Highways teams began to resurface the road and footpath.

County Cllr Ian Bates has sent the following message:

“Following the lorry fire on London Road, St Ives, Tuesday evening, our highways team have been working with the fire service and police to clean the area and make sure it is safe after the lorry was carrying chemicals.

The lorry has now been removed, the Environment Agency and Anglian Water have cleaned the drains and our crews have been manning the road closure throughout the night.

Our highways team will resurface the road along with the footpath, there is roughly 70m of road surface and 30m of footpath which need repairing.

Along with the road and footpath, the crews also need to assess and repair the damage caused by the fire to the traffic signals and the street lighting before the road can re-open. We hope the road will reopen by the weekend.”

Cllr Ian Bates, local member for The Hemingfords and Fenstanton, said: “I’d like to thank the emergency services and our highways officers for their hard work on this incident. The road will remain closed while we carry out necessary repairs as the road surface has been damaged from the chemicals. It’s not just the road we need to consider, the footpath, the traffic lights and the street lighting all need to be repaired as they’ve all been damaged in the fire. We’ll carry out the repairs as quickly as we can. A diversion is in place in the area and I’d like to thank all local residents for their patience and understanding while work in underway.”
